Incompatible with own components?

I purchased the hw-n550 from best buy earlier this week. When I first got the unit hooked up to my tv, a new phillips 6000 series, the sound bar and sub woofer worked fine. I had also purchased the add-on surround speakers from best buy. They too worked fine... for a moment. Soon the sound bar and speakers would cut out for 3 seconds, then resume sound for about 5 seconds, and repeat. This was constant between the cable box and dvd, so it wasn't a source issue. I tried restarting the unit, to no avail. I changed out the hdmi cable to see if it was faulty, but the issue persisted. I called tech support, and they suggested disconnecting the power supply to the sound bar for a hard restart. The sound fired back up, so I figured it was an initial pairing issue and that would be that. Well, it was but only for two days. Today the issue of cutting in and out returned. I called tech support and we tried various things none of which corrected the problem. Eventually they said I could ship the sound bar to them for repairs, or I could return it to the store as I had just purchased the system. So I returned the sound bar and sub woofer to Best Buy and exchanged it for another one. I hooked the new unit up as per the included instructions and it worked fine... until I paired it with the rear speakers. The instant the blue led light changed from blinking (pairing) to solid (paired), the cutting in and out returned. I again went through and physically disconnected the power supply on all components, and reconnected them according to the manual. This did not fix the problem. In fact after a couple of reconnects, the entire system cut out indefinitely. At this point I again call tech support, we again try various things, none of which work. They then suggest to connect the tv to the sound bar with an optical cable, and voila, the entire system fires back up. However, I'm now in the position of 1) not knowing if the hdmi sound inputs will work at all with other devices that lack an optical out 2) not knowing if the cutting in and out will return, as it had previously 3) having to send off components for repair if I want an answer to the first question. As there is limited time to return all components to Best Buy, I am looking at returning everything now as it doesn't work as advertised or keeping it and hope the issue doesn't come back down the road. I think I'll go with the first one...
